Abstract
In the present study three mercury resistant bacteria of Enterobacteriaceae family, Streptococcaceae family and Enterococcus family were isolated from sediment samples of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), Odisha and identified by various biochemical tests. Three isolates out of twenty isolates showed highest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value. A percentage of mercury resistant bacteria in sediments at site 1,2,3,4 are 42%, 26.32%, 67.56%, 83.93% respectively. From above results it was concluded that the treatment of industrial effluents containing mercury by bacteria may be appropriate solution for effluent disposal problem.
