Abstract

Solar energy has become one of the most popular renewable energies due to the drastic increase of global energy demand and rapid depletion of conventional fossil fuel resources. Advanced power electronic systems are required to utilize and develop renewable energy sources. In solar system, utilizing of maximum power from the source is one of the most important functions of the power electronic converters. The output power characteristics of a PV array are influenced by the environmental factors so that the conversion efficiency is low. Therefore a maximum power tracking (MPPT) technique is necessary to track the peak power to maximize the efficiency. This project focuses on mathematical piece wise linear modelling and simulation of three diode model of a PV solar cell. The shunt and series resistance is calculated by using Newton Raphson iterative method by varying solar irradiance and temperature. The MPPT algorithm is implemented by using buck converter in MATLAB/SIMULINK.
