Abstract

A numerical investigation of directional solidification of ammonium chloride solution is presented.The governing equations for mass,momentum,energy and species transport are derived applicable to solid region,liquid region and the mushy zone interface and a working CFD-model of the solidification process of ammonium chloride is created.A solidification model was used in Ansys FLUENT 15.0 to simulate the solidification process and species transport accompanied with thermal and solutal buoyancy is enabled to study the pattern of macrosegregation as a result of thermal-solutal convection in the melt and mushy zone.
