Abstract

A pharmaceutical plant is a high risk plant with potential risks of fire, explosion and poisoning. To the market challenges, pharmaceutical plants need to provide safer plant operations.Hazard identification and risk assessment is a technique which is used to identify the hazards involved in each task in different departments. The purpose of HIRA is to identify the potential hazards and the associated risks in the process, operation, equipment and maintenance and analyse the events and calculate frequency and consequences of hazardous event. After the hazard was identified, risk involved was categorized. The risk assessment method is application of quantitative and qualitative parameters. In the quantitative parameters, frequency and severity were calculated and the possible consequences were found. The risk level was found and characterized with the help of risk matrix and control measures were recommended. In the qualitative parameter two techniques were used. Which were HAZOP and JSA. HAZOP study technique provides a detailed analysis of hazard connected with process and results are easy to realize. In JSA, first select the job, break the job, identify the hazard associated with each job and recommended the possible control measures.
