Abstract

This work shows the possibility of effectively utilizing the tri-axial accelerometer for tilt detecting or sensing in slopes. A wireless tilt meter is designed and developed by Arduino microcontroller, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) modules and tri-axial accelerometer which could be uniquely customized for the requirements of monitoring slope stability in surface mines. By recording tilts of any slope, in a surface mine, over longer period of time, changes in readings can infer instabilities in the rock mass underlying the slope being measured. By introduction of a few more tiltmeters in a cross section on a surface of slope, the whole surface can be examined. The recorded information will be sent to the registered mobile numbers by using the GSM module. Tiltmeters can be utilized as a part of the mining environment to monitor slope stability by making use of gravitational force to measure angles of inclination relative to horizontal. Despite the fact that wireless tiltmeters exist today, they do not have certain roughness and sensitivity preventing use in mines. Several monitoring systems are being used already in mines. Conventional techniques for observing, however irrefutably helpful, are usually time taking. By utilizing wireless gadgets that exchange information back to a single point, information procurement and examining time can be reduced, which might spare the mine workers time. As surface mines proceed to deepen, and underground mines keep on progressing further from the surface, the need of monitoring keeps on expanding, this broadening of extent will require more time for proper monitoring, unless an automated system is implemented. With appropriate wireless communication, constant examination of a whole mine is conceivable. Laboratory Test results shows not so good correlation between measured value and obtained tilt value as it was observed that the Maximum tilt angle can be measured upto 20di by the designed system and also 2 degree variation was observed at some instances. The output of tilt sensing was sent to the registered mobile numbers. This developed system has an application in mining as well as in civil engineering. The developed system was installed at Dungari mine of M/s ACC Ltd for observation of signal transmission of sensed data from mine site to mine office and mobiles of mine authorities
